Discounting Massages - Pros and Cons

In my article about gifts and specials for massage clients I pose a question about special pricing options and discounting massages.

In the last paragraph the article says, "Some therapists feel this creates a situation where clients postpone getting massages during the rest of the year, holding out for special prices. Others feel that special pricing may attract new clients who will try the massage and stay throughout the coming year."

And so I'll ask you here - What do you think about discounting massages?

I often offer a 'new client only' discount. I feel that most of my clients know and understand that for me to stay in business I need to have new clients coming into my practice. Plus, most (if not all) of them had a new client special when they first came to me. So I feel it all balances out.
Plus, at holiday time I offer some sort of gift certificate discount to help them with their holiday shopping. They are always welcome to buy these discounted certificates for themselves to use throughout the year.

Interesting thoughts - thanks so much for sharing!

I have a very high client retention rate so sometimes I think it might be worthwhile to discount a first time massage but at the same time I don't want to get them in that habit. :-)

I did a special bonus for Gift Certificates this Christmas as well and gave free upgrades with the purchase of a gift certificate.

I also have a "buy 10 get 1 free" which is really like a 10% discount off each massage if you think about it. I count gift certificates sales towards that total as well.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

We have to be awair that offering huge discounts will undermine the profession. I think we can agree we all paid our fair shair for our education. We need to keep in mind WE DETERMAIN OUR WORTH! I dont know about you but I'm worth every penny!!
